UPMC Complex Care Connect™

UPMC Complex Care Connect is linking patients from across the country with highly specialized surgical care in an innovative way.

Through unique partnerships, we can operate on patients at UPMC. But they remain under the care of their local doctor at a partner hospital before and after surgery.

This program arranges surgical procedures at UPMC while giving patients the convenience of continuing care from their own doctor.

Our partner hospitals receive training on UPMC protocols of care. This lets them provide most — if not all — pre- and post-op care, except where mandated by UNOS supplied by UPMC’s transplant team.

Our program currently has two programs under our UPMC Complex Care Connect services — living-donor liver transplant and robotic pancreatic surgery.

Living-Donor Liver Transplant

UPMC’s transplant program performs more living donor liver transplants (LDLT) than any other center in the country.

Our LDLT team:

  • Coordinates care for both the donor and the transplant recipient.
  • Offers personal, concierge-level services for patients and their families.

Lung Transplant

Lung transplant is a vital option to prolong survival and improve quality of life of patients. Since our program’s inception in 1982, UPMC has performed more than 2,000 lung and heart-lung transplants.

Our lung transplant physicians are:

  • Experts in high-risk care.
  • Pioneers in ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP).
  • At the forefront of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • Working in partnership with UPMC Immune Transplant and Therapy Center (ITTC).

Pediatric Living-Donor Liver Transplant

As the top ranked hospital in the U.S. for pediatric liver transplant outcomes, the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh houses one of the most experienced transplant teams in the world.

Our compassionate, knowledgeable professionals:

  • Work with patients, parents, family members, and donors throughout every step of this lifelong process.
  • Support families through our UPMC’s Champion program, which offers tools to assist caregivers in finding a donor match.

Peritoneal Metastases Surgery

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center runs one of the world’s busiest surgical oncology programs.

At our dedicated cancer treatment facility, we can offer patients access to:

  • Specialized care.
  • Cutting edge research and clinical trials.
  • Our multidisciplinary approach.

Patients know they can trust the physicians at UPMC with their lives. For this reason, 150 to 200 people come to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for peritoneal metastases treatment each year.

Robotic Pancreatic Surgery (Whipple Surgery)

The robotic Whipple procedure has transformed the treatment of people with pancreatic cancer or other cancers of the duodenum and bile duct.

Whipple surgery done robotically typically will reduce:

  • The number of complications.
  • A patient’s hospital stay.
  • Recovery time.

UPMC is a national leader in performing robotic Whipple surgery.
